Nathaniel’s is not just any hat shop. Owned and operated by Native American Master Hatter Nate Funmaker, Nathaniel’s creates custom hats of the finest quality available anywhere. Using 60 to 100 year old equipment and maintaining centuries old techniques, Nate’s fine fur felt hats are renowned and treasured for their quality and timeless style. Nate’s hats are proudly worn by people from all walks of life, including business people, cowboys, ranchers, celebrities and politicians, to name a few.
Nate and his wife moved to Southwestern Colorado in 1994, where Nate worked as an apprentice for a well known custom hat and clothing company. After several years of intense, one-on-one training, he became the Master Hatter for the company. In 2000, Nate purchased the hat making portion of the company and went under his own name.
Born in Wisconsin to the Ho-Chunk tribe, Nate was the 10th of 11 children born to Adam and Doris Funmaker. Nate’s family is very artistic, his father is known as one of the world’s best scrimshanders (etching on different types of stones) and his mother, also an artist, was the daughter of Mountain Wolf Woman, who’s autobiography is still in print. To his knowledge, Nate is the only Native American Master Hatter.
In 2015, Nate moved his business to Georgetown, Texas. Located on the Downtown Square, he continues to create his custom hats, living by the slogan, “We make ‘em like they used to.”
